The Labrador Retriever is America’s most popular dog breed. Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog. Labs are famously friendly. They are companionable housemates who bond with the whole family, and they socialize well with neighbor dogs and humans alike. The Lab is an enthusiastic athlete that requires lots of exercise, like swimming and games of fetch, that will last until your throwing arm literally falls off. Bred to retrieve fishing nets in Newfoundland in the early 1800s they are excellent sporting dogs for upland and swimming retrieval of birds & waterfowl. They can be trained to exercise a variety of tasks and tricks.

The newborn puppies are given a Veterinarian health screen checkup before 6 weeks old. They are vaccinated for: Distemper, Adenovirus Type 1, Adenovirus Type 2, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, Leptospira canicola, Leptospira grippotyphosa, Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae, Leptospira Pomona and are dewormed at 6, 9,12 & 15 weeks. We do not remove dew claws.

Since Rockcastle Labs is a small family breeder, we only average two litters a year with an average of 7-10 puppies per litter. Our puppies are born inside and kept with the mother until about 4 weeks when they begin the process of weaning. They are then moved to large covered outdoor kennel and are taken out and played with for hours everyday by our family so they are acclimated to children and other dogs. By the time they are ready for adoption they have been socialized into a family pet.

The thick water resistant Lab fur coat is designated as either chocolate, black, or yellow. The shades of the yellow can vary from a platinum blonde to yellow beige to a fox red.

Normally, once a litter is born and we announce the colors and sex, and people begin to reserve a puppy by placing a $200 deposit on the dog to be pickup up after 6 weeks old. Dogs on deposit held after eight weeks will incur a $8 a day boarding charge plus vaccination costs at 9, 12 & 15 weeks.

Fox Red Girls
Chip Cates, PG has been raising AKC registered Labrador Retrievers for over 30 years in West Alabama. For the past 15 years, Rockcastle Labs have primarily bred, raised, and trained fox red labs. We have largely utilized our dogs for upland bird hunting such as doves and quail. However, previous clients have used our dogs for duck hunting, upland birding, and family companions. These dogs love to play, fetch, and swim, and they are great around children.

Our retired Dame is Mizzoula AKC# SR90102807. She is 9 years old, petite at 60 lbs and dirty blonde. Zou didn't come back into heat last Spring so we assumed that she had entered menopause but had an UT-OH litter January 2024 and we did not intend to breed her again. BUT she came into full heat this week and invited TuskaHooma to service her before we realized she was in heat. They connected several times and puppies should arrive late May with a early July pick up.
Our new Dame is Massey Two AKC# SS29391506 who is fox red, petite at 55 lbs and was born October 2021. We will not breed her until after her next heat cycle probably late summer 2025. Due to lack of deposits and speaking with other Lab breeders, we are not planning to breed again her until demand increases and TuskaHooma matures.
Our new stud is TuskaHooma (fox red) AKC# SS47102301 born April 2024 but he is just a puppy and his first litter is on the way!

If you want us to hold a deposited puppy after 8 weeks old there is a $8 per day boarding fee, plus any additional vaccinations that occur during the holding time.
Puppy Purchase
Full payment is due before pick up or delivery. We only accept cash, postal check or money orders at time of pick up. Payments can also be made on Venmo via Chip Cates. Payments include the price of the puppy minus the deposit, plus delivery costs or handling fees. If using Paypal to purchase, there is a 5% charge.
